a site dedicated to the Westfield ZEi, a variation of the Westfield SEi.

The ZEi was only available as a factory built car with small volume type approval and has passed European crash tests. Many of the modifications required for type approval have since been integrated into the Westfield SEi.

My first contact with se7en type cars was in 1986 when I visited Sylva Sportcars with a friend who was planning on building a Sylva Striker. strikerThe test drive in the Striker was a real eye opener and in the following two years I visited many Kitcar Shows and started reading the Kitcar Magazines.

After much thought I decided the Westfield SEi was the car for me and I ordered a starter kit in 1989. Over the next two years I built the car and after a short period of ownership, I sold the car and moved to Germany.

At the end of the nineties I rediscovered my interest in se7ens and started thinking about buying a Westfield again. After much research I decided the best route to take was to buy a second-hand ZEi as this model was sold in Germany and would be relatively easy to register here. After comparing prices both here and in England I decided to import one.

In mid 2004 I started searching for a suitable ZEi and as luck would have it I found one on the internet. After driving over to England to look at the car, the deal was done and I would soon be the owner of a Westfield again. The car was delivered to my parents in Sussex so that I could pick it up at the beginning of August.

Before picking the car up

I had to arrange Insurance which as it turned out was no easy thing. I could not insure it in England because I don’t live there and I could not insure it in Germany because the car was not registered here. After lots of searching I found a specialist in Hamburg who could insure it for a month at a considerable cost. After insuring the car I flew over and collected it. Driving it back was just great, with it being one of the hottest days of the year and the roads being empty.

In order to register the car here it would have to go through the dreaded TÜV. The only problem was the local TÜV office didn't have a clue how it could be done and told me it could cost thousands of Euros. I decided the easiest route would be for the German Westfield Importer to do the job for me. I arranged to take the car over at the end of August and picked it up a week later with everything that I needed to register the car. Although there were a few repairs and modifications to be done it still worked out cheaper than buying one here.
