Rear Wing Bolts

The first job I decided to do was replace the rear wing bolts which were very rusty. Some of the bolts needed to be cut in order to remove them. These were replaced with stainless steel nuts and bolts which should last longer.

New Air Filter

I decided to remove the Air Filter box and replace it with a K&N Air Filter. This was a simple job and after buying a Filter on Ebay was quickly fitted.Still not sure if this is the best place for the filter but for the moment it will have to do.

Zetec overcooling problem

Having read on the WSCC board that the Westfield zetec cooling system design causes the engine to run to cold, this seemed to be the case by mine with the temperature struggling to get up to 90°. The changes I made were taken this web site which details how to change the existing cooling system.Having modified the cooling system I am now getting a constant temperature of just over 90°.

Heater removal

On hot days the car was getting very hot in the footwells, especially on the passenger side. This seems to be caused by air from the engine bay being forced the wrong way through the heater matrix thus causing a constant flow of warm air to enter the car. I tried blocking off the heater but found the heat generated was still to much and so decided to remove the heater.

Spare Wheel removal

While driving the car I started noticing a knocking noise coming from the rear end. This turned out to be the spare wheel bracket clamp which had broken off and was causing the bracket to knock against the body. The bracket clamp was also used to hold the rear exiting exhaust can so some sort of new bracket had to be made. I have seen lots of Westfields without spare wheels and decided I would remove the spare wheel and just make up a new bracket for the exhaust. I now have a few holes in the rear body work which will have to be filled or covered up.

RAC Rollbar

After buying the car one of my top priorities was to replace the normal rollbar with an RAC rollbar because I do not think the normal rollbar would be any use in a roll and I think it looks better. On the WSCC web site a topic was started about the possibility of a Bulk buy on the RAC Rollbar from Westfield, I quickly got my name down for this. On my car the brackets for the lower mounting points and the four point seat belt harnesses upper mounting points are missing which meant getting them welded in somehow. I ordered the rollbar and brackets from Westfield and got them delivered to my parents in England. I had planned to go to Stoneleigh for the Kitcar Show and would drive over in the ZEi and get the brackets welded in by a friend of my brother.

Once back in Germany I set about modifying the bootbox so that the rear stays could pass through it but at the same time no unsightly hole was left. The method I used was described in the WSCC club magazine Westfield World and looks very good once completed.

Cycle Wings

I have decided to remove the long wings which tend to flap about when driving fast and fit cycle wings. I purchased a set of wings on ebay and bought the brackets from Tiger Racing. The removal of the wings turned out to be difficult as the bolts holding them on had rusted in the retaining rivnuts so that I had to drill all the bolts out. The new brackets were fitted and the wings were then stuck to the brackets using silkaflex. The headlights and indicators were both fitted to the old wings so I purchased new headlamp brackets and at the same time replaced the old 7" lamps with smaller ones. Since fitting I have noticed that the top speed has increased slightly which cant be bad.

Exhaust System

In September 2008 I managed to rip a hole in my sump and smash the thermostat housing on the chassis. I decided to take the car off the road in order to save a bit of money and repair it over the winter. I had to remove a part of the exhaust system that runs under the sump and discovered that the Lambda sensor was also damaged. The exhaust system was not in a very good state and as the Exchange rate was so low, it would be a good time to replace the system. I ordered a new manifold and silencer with cat from Westfield and had it delivered to my parents. A used thermostat housing, sump pan and Lambda sensor were bought cheaply on Ebay .
